Google is declaring war on the password, as WIRED reported today. Everyday, we use passwords to log into important aspects of our digital lives. Experts agree, however, that passwords just aren't that secure. “Along with many in the industry, we feel passwords and simple bearer tokens such as cookies are no longer sufficient to keep users safe,” - Google Vice President of Security Eric Grosse and Engineer Mayank Upadhyay. The two are the authors of a research paper to be published later this month in the engineering journal IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine.

Due to the inherent security flaws, Google is applying its R&D power to find alternatives to passwords. Someday soon, users could access their accounts using some sort of smartphone authorization or a USB key like Yubico.
